UK Holiday Destinations: Top 6 Countryside Breaks

Many of us love to get away every now and then, but sometimes a holiday abroad might feel like too much to arrange. Alternatively, you may have health conditions that make more exotic holidays unfeasible. If this is the case, your holidays may need to be limited to the sights of the UK. With this in mind, we wanted to go through some of the best UK holiday destinations. For this list, we’ll be leaving out the big cities and focusing on the UK’s beautiful countryside. These are ideal for quieter breaks where you can enjoy your holiday without so many crowds.

Top 6 UK Holiday Destinations

Northumbria

Northumbria is a fantastic place for a peaceful getaway. It is absolutely packed with culture, from Hadrian’s Wall to Alnwick Castle, not to mention its position not far from the sea. This is a particularly good place for those who enjoy the outdoors, as a lot of the local attractions involve nice walks and fresh air. Northumbria also has national parks and ancient castles to explore. It is known for having more castles than any county in the UK and is also extremely proud of its local produce – especially their seafood, which you will see in many local restaurants.

Arbroath

If you are looking for a Scottish holiday, but you want to be away from the madding crowd, this is the place for you. Arbroath is an idyllic seaside town with beautiful sandstone cliffs that stretch all across it. Famous for the Arbroath Smokie, the town attracts tourists every year to try the delicacy. It also holds historic significance as it is the location where the Declaration of Arbroath was signed. This is essentially a declaration of independence for Scotland. Arbroath also has a few museums, fantastic views, and even Britain’s oldest surviving off-shore lighthouse.

Grasmere

If you are looking for something a little more lowkey, then Grasmere is the perfect location. Grasmere is a small village in Cumbria made popular thanks to William Wordsworth. Most of the buildings are dated from the early 19th or 20th Century, but the picturesque town is still equipped with all the mod-cons including gift shops, restaurants, and B&Bs. Grasmere has historic churches dating all the way back to the 13th Century. As well as this, it has breathtaking natural beauty and is certainly a great place to recharge, which may be exactly what you need.

The Cotswolds

cotswolds, one of the best uk holiday destinations in the countryside

The next of our top UK holiday destinations is the Cotswolds. The Cotswolds are the essence of the English countryside. They are perfect if you are looking for a getaway with outdoor attractions. There are plenty of beautiful walks you can partake in, particularly if you go in the lavender season, which is late April/early May. The Cotswolds run through five counties and have a variety of family-friendly attractions for all ages. They are brimming with culture and history and many companies offer tours of the best locations dotted throughout the Cotswolds. Most of the towns still have original architecture dating back to the 16th Century. The Cotswolds also have some amazing literary connections, including William Shakespeare and George Orwell.

Bath

Bath is one of the most popular cities to visit in England. It takes its name from the Roman Baths that date back as early as 60 A.D. It is also host to the Bath Abbey, which has been a place of worship for over 1000 years. The city is bustling, and the surrounding areas have beautiful stretches of land for some great sightseeing. Bath also has a fantastic collection of galleries, the largest being the Victoria Art Gallery. The city was recognised in 1987 for its outstanding universal value and cultural significance, so it is definitely a must-see.

Kent

Kent – otherwise known as the garden of England – is the last of our top 6 UK holiday destinations. It’s one of the most scenic trips you can take. Tunbridge Wells is one of only three “Royal” towns in the UK, and it matches up to its name. There is some fantastic architecture and plenty to do. Kent is the oldest county in England and has over 17,000 listed buildings. It has a range of delicious and fresh local produce to try. Many of the local pubs and restaurants take advantage of the locally sourced food. If you manage to book your stop at the right time, you will also be able to attend the many festivals that Kent hosts, such as the Black Deer Festival or the Woodlands Festival.
